For the need of this tutorial, we are using a clean Joomla 3.6.2 installation with the default Protostar template.

Joomla's core Contacts component (com_contact) has built-in support for custom fields — no third-party plugin is required, and the approach is fully upgrade-safe. This is the same mechanism used since Joomla 3.7 and it works unchanged in Joomla 6.
