Once installed, new versions appear under System → Update → Extensions in your Joomla admin.

What it does

PankyReadTime adds a reading-time badge to individual Joomla articles, helping visitors decide how much time they’ll need to read. The estimate is based on the article’s word count and a configurable reading speed. You can choose whether to show seconds, display the estimate in a compact or descriptive format, and place the badge before the article, after its title, or after its content. An optional “Finish by” time can also be shown in the visitor’s or site’s timezone.

The plugin can additionally display a scroll progress bar, with configurable position, color, height, and an optional percentage indicator. Its features are configurable in Joomla’s plugin settings.

  1. In your Joomla administrator, go to System → Install → Extensions.
  2. Upload the PankyReadTime ZIP package and complete the installation.
  3. Go to System → Manage → Plugins, search for PankyReadTime, and enable it.
  4. Open the plugin settings to configure the reading speed, badge display, and progress bar.
  5. Visit an individual article on your site to see the plugin in action.

  • SecurityThe progress-bar colour setting is now checked before it's written into the page. If it isn't a valid CSS colour (hex, rgb()/rgba(), hsl()/hsla() or a colour name), the default #007bff is used.
  • Fixthe Listen button now appears only when the browser has a voice to speak with. On Linux without speech-dispatcher voices, or in snap browsers, it used to show but stay silent.
  • Fixif speech doesn't start or the browser reports an error, the controls reset and show "Speech isn't available in this browser" instead of staying on "Pause".
  • Fixworked around Chrome sometimes dropping speech that starts right after a stop.

  • NoteRequires Joomla 6.1 or later and PHP 8.3 or later.
  • Noteites on Joomla 5.x or 6.0 should stay on 3.x, and the update server only offers 4.0.0 to Joomla 6.1+ sites.
